The latest report I've gotten suggests an unimpressive Chum Salmon run and
unusually high numbers of California Sea Lions in the lower river. A half
dozen sea lions were observed last weekend hauled out in one spot along the
river upstream of Interstate 5 a short distance. You'd think the sea lions
and Bald Eagles might both be drawn to a good salmon run but, if it's there,
the sports fisherman aren't getting many of them and I'm told that the
Nisqually tribal fishermen aren't bothering to fish because of low numbers
of fish.

O.K., that's all of the third hand, potentially suspect, information I'll be
passing along this evening.

I wonder if crippled waterfowl could be part of the attraction... There are
thousands of Cackling Geese in the area right now.

Walked the newly completed 1 mile dike trail at the refuge yesterday and was
amazed at the number of Bald Eagles that were present. We counted
somewhere between 25 and 35. One tree had a cluster of eight perching.
Well worth a visit if you haven't been there lately.

Some are attributing the high densities to a large salmon run on the
Nisqually river. Any other thoughts?
