Yesterday I checked the swans roosting on Carty lake, Carty Unit and counted 11 trumpeter swans mixed in with about 300+ tundra swans. I could not see all the swans from my vantage point so I suspect the number of trumpeters could be higher. The best vantage point is to continue straight after crossing the footbridge from the parking lot and stay on the hill just before it drops down to the creek. Carty Lake is the large lake in from and you will be as close to the swans as one can get without disturbing them. I have been hearing the trumpeters since Monday and decided to go down a look because of the frequency of the calls. If you want to do some homework on trumpeter/tundra swan ID this could be a great place to do it.
