Today, Jan 16, there were a few birds present at the Steigerwald Lake NWR, in Clark County, that I noted while out with a group of volunteers doing maintenance on some habitat restoration plantings. Around the visitor's parking lot at milepost 18 on Highway 14 there were 16 WESTERN MEADOWLARKS. A GREAT HORNED OWL was in the trees near the footbridge over Gibbons Creek and the "Slender-billed" WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCHs were very vocal in the cottonwoods along the creek. One PEREGRINE FALCON swooped over the tree tops and a couple of adult BALD EAGLES were a treat for the young kids to see. Lonesome George, the MUTE SWAN, was on the east pond where he has spent most of his time since first arriving in February 2006. And I found a flock of about 30 AMERICAN PIPITS in one of the mowed fields that I checked carefully hoping for any other species that might flock with them.
