Today (Sunday, 17 Jan 2010) I made a quick visit to the Theler Wetlands (Mason County). I was surprised to see a flock of ten (exactly ten) WESTERN BLUEBIRDS. They were foraging in a field just beyond the barbed-wire gate that goes to a farm with a cute name. This is on the long, dead-end trail at the east end of the reserve. After they had foraged for a good 20 minutes along a fenceline out there, they flew right over to me and perched in a tree by the dike. Then they flew out to the matted-down marsh vegetation outside the dike and foraged out there.

Oh, by the way how is the name of this place pronounced? Is it pronounced "taylor," or "THEE-ler," or maybe "theller" to rhyme with "feller?"

At Union (also along Hood Canal in Mason County) today were a pair of REDHEADS, plus about 25 Canvasbacks.

At Potlatch State Park, also in Mason County, were two EARED GREBES. These birds were fishing just north of the north end of the park.

At Eells Springs Trout Hatchery (up the Skokomish River Valley a few miles) were two GREEN HERONS. Note: there are several places in this valley where the road is awash with ankle-deep water, and the river is close to overtopping its banks.
