The Dunlin were back in Edmonds on the marina's south breakwater this
morning (1-18-10). At first we counted 400-500 on the top of the
breakwater. We could not see down the far side of it. Then
something set them all to flight and we revised our estimate to
anywhere between 2,000 and 4,000 birds. It was a huge flock and so
nice to see on the Sound! The one female White-winged Scoter
continues. We had an intriguing Guillemot. It appeared larger than
usual for a PIGU and was much lighter colored with a prominent white
wing patch. I got photos for review and it was confirmed by the
underwing pattern to be a PIGU. Cameras sure can come in handy to
resolve a question in the field!
