As many of you may know, mute swans are classified as "deleterious wildlife"
by WDFW. This means they are not beneficial to our native wildlife and can
do harm. Therefore it is illegal to own, buy, sell, breed, transfer, etc.
mute swans in Washington State.
Recently there has been an effort to have an exemption to this rule for
some lakeside owners who want mute swans for Canada goose control and as
pets. These folks are getting press and have put a bill in the legislature
to overturn sound wildlife management and allow mute swans under certain
conditions (poorly written).
If anyone is concerned about this please contact me off list. As those
who are concerned about native birds, this is a serious issue. Your voice
needs to be heard.
