Four of us saw the Gyrfalcon fly over our heads about 9:30 this morning. We
were doing a bird, species and quantity count, survey in MacDonald Park,
Located on the South edge of The town of Carnation. Mark Crawford started
the proper approach of questioning of what else could we have seen? He did
a quick draw and produced his copy of David Sibley's guide. After looking at
and discussing the pictures, Hugh Jennings, Dianne Weiss, Mark and I agreed
that what we saw was a Gyrfalcon. The bird flew North-West-ish in the
general direction of Carnation farms Where I had talked to Marv Breece and
John Tubbs about 8:A.M. this morning. They were the only two people that I
encountered who were hunting (views of) Gyrfalcon, then. None of the four
of us who saw the Gyrfalcon had their phone numbers in our cell phones. We
were more than a half an hour walk from our cars, It would have been more
than 45 minutes after the sighting before I could reach them and others,
such as Ryan, who arrived at carnation after I left. Such a report seemed
like it would have reached them too late to be immediately useful, so I
continued following along on Hugh's Survey.
