Hear, hear! The list owners have a hard job.

I for one am glad to "hear" about the difference between the "documented" and the "urban myth" of night-time predators. I always learn so much "listening" to the chatter.

My yard backs to the Grace Cole Nature Park in Lake Forest Park, and I have seen in my yard: coyotes, raccoons, opossums, feral and domestic cats, squirrels, Sharp-shinned Hawks, Cooper's Hawks, and Barred Owls (once an adult with a fledgling). My yard has been over-flown by Bald Eagles, Red-tailed hawks, Raven, Osprey and Great-blue Herons. It's a jungle out there, and it is a wonder that any birds, bees, or other small wild things even survive. Especially as the wild areas become less and less.

I do my best to keep my yard wild enough for the wild things, and clear enough that I can walk in my yard without snagging my clothes [I do have a token patch of grass]. I have two flower beds that are mostly maintained; meaning I cut flowers and dead-head until fall before letting the seeds set, and I clean up most of the debris starting about this weekend, weather permitting. (I use, year-round, iron-phosphate slug deterrents only.)
I have two other beds, and two brush piles that are for the birds, butterflies, salamanders, voles, and other wild things. These areas mostly have native food-bearing plants with snags, logs, leaves and debris purposely left (I have been known to ask neighbors for some of their maple leaves in the fall-which I spread so that Song Sparrows, Fox Sparrows, Spotted Towhees and Robins can easily find delectables during the cold). I keep a temperature-activated heater in one of the bird baths, and I keep hummingbird feeders full all year.

Now, if I just had the money to stay home and enjoy this paradise!
