hello everyone,

i wrote and published a story that has received a fair bit of attention from a variety of online sources. this piece is a translation of a new PLoS ONE paper that describes "affiliate behavior" in common ravens. my translation of that paper, plus some of my musings about the potential evolutionary meaning of this, can be found here: Empathy Is For the Birds;

scienceblogs was apparently hit by a zombie invasion on thursday past, which caused a bit of silliness to occur. but i used this event to write about a serious issue that i will be developing further in future essays: zombie species. my essay, are zombie vultures in our future? can be read here;
