Hey tweets, lest we get into an argument about religion (which my
mother told me never never never to discuss with my in-laws or anyone
else I wanted to have over for dinner), Scott is correct that it is
more accurate to say "evolutionist" rather than "environmentalist"
when talking about the theory of evolution.

On another note, it's July now - can fall migration be far behind? The
mud is looking narrow but good on Main Pond at the Fill; it's even
better at Shoveler's Pond, which has not evaporated yet, due to our
cold, wet, non-spring. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a great fall
migration. I do wish we could establish some sort of network with our
northern counterparts to learn in general terms how well the breeding
season is going in the far north. It would be exciting to know, for
example, that Stilt Sandpipers did exceptionally well (as they must
have done a few years ago when they seemed to be everywhere in western
WA during migration). For sites such as the Fill, which are not main
feeding stops for shorebirds but which do serve the birds off the
beaten track, this kind of information could at least get our little
hopes up.

In a more serious vein, I find if my eyes are prepared to see a
particular species, I have a little more success seeing it instead of
maybe passing over it without really *looking*. This is especially
true for juvenile shorebirds, a group I seem to have to re-learn every
season. - Connie, Seattle
