Subject: [Tweeters] Western and Least Sandpipers on Vashon Island

Today leading some visitors on a tour I found about 50 peeps at KVI Beach on Vashon Island, mostly Westerns but including at least 5 Leasts. This is the earliest we've had them return for the fall migration by a couple of days each.

It's been interesting the last several weeks with a couple of Brandt's Cormorants still present at the north end dock, six Common Loons in Tramp Harbor last week and a Horned Grebe in Quartermaster Harbor last week as well. I've never seen any cormorants in June on Vashon and while 2-3 loon non-breeders often hang around Tramp Harbor through the summer, a group of six seems unusual.

I also saw two Common Murres off the Tahlequah/Pt. Defiance ferry run on Tuesday. It's been several years since I've seen them off Vashon in summer.
