Ok, one last RFI for me today: I am headed to Anchorage next week and would love to maximize my chances for getting some of the northern species. I will have a rental car, but plan on staying in Anchorage each night. Thanks to Marcus Roening, he has let borrow the ABA Guide to Alaska and an older guide to Anchorage area birding sites.

My big question is how far do I have to drive and in what direction to find some fancy chickens - like Ptarmigan and such? Any suggestions for areas not too far from Anchorage would be appreciated.
