best way to pack the tripod is in a small duffle bag just large enough to
get it in (reversing the head can help in this respect. as mentioned, wrap
clothing or outdoor gear around it for padding. my experience (~ 20
flights) is that they don't even look thru the scope when you carry it on.
same with bins.
