Biggest problem is local short flight or international where they try to force you to gate check your carry-ons at the last minute.? Do NOT trust your scope on gate check.? If a royal fuss doesn't work, have a smaller valuables only bag ready inside your carry-on and let them gate check you mostly empty carry-on roller bag.?

best way to pack the tripod is in a small duffle bag just large enough to get it in (reversing the head can help in this respect.? as mentioned, wrap clothing or outdoor gear around it for padding.? my experience (~ 20 flights) is that they don't even look thru the scope when you carry it on.? same with bins.

Most airlines don't like tripods.? Check the tripod in your luggage & carry scope in carry-on.

Hi all,

I'm headed north next week and will be taking my spotting scope.? Can I simply just carry on the scope attached to the tripod onto the plane as one of my personal items?? I don't have a case to carry it in.? I have checked bags before and seen items as binders and such crushed so I don't really want to put it in the checked luggage.

Thanks for any information you can provide!
