Hi Dennis,
?
In the past 3 years, I find Salmo Pass and Salmon Meadows (near Lone Frank Pass) to be the most reliable spots for them.? ?
?
This weekend, I recently had a few birds up there along with pine grosbeaks.?black backed and 3-Toe?woodpeckers,?and spruce grouse--roughly 4 miles pass the Salmon Meadows Campground.? As you know, most of the other areas that you mentioned?and tried?are severely burn.? From my experiences, I tend to find them in denser, wetter groves of Engelmann Spruce and Lodgepole Pine.??
?
I read they are toughest to find during June when they nest, but I had several the first week of June.? So go?figure, ?birds have no rules. Early fall seems to be excellent where I see several flocks, perhaps family moving out and about.? They also look fresher in plumage during this time.
?
They can be tough to photograph as they tend to stay up high in the spruce trees despite pishing, playbacks, and pygmy owl imitationsJ
?
Good luck!!
