What a blistering day it was today. I could have turned on the central air, but
I decided to take the family out for a boat ride instead. We boated from our
home in Vaughn Bay to Joemma State Park via Heron Island. I expected to see a
few Pigeon Guillemots, but was I ever surprised to come up on a Tufted Puffin.
The bird pretty much ignored us as we stopped the boat about 30 yards from it.
Did we ever get some great views. Wouldn't you know that no one brought along
their camera. What kind of birders are we? I've lived at this location for about
12 years and this is the first Tufted Puffin I've seen in Case Inlet. It was
sighted between Heron island and Vaughn Bay - closer to Vaughn than Heron. Oh,
we sighted a Pelagic Cormorant not far from where we saw the Tufted Puffin. We
got cooled down and had a real bird treat as well!
