Netta Smith reported a breeding-plumaged Red-necked Grebe in Lake Washington off the swimming beach at Magnuson Park, Seattle, this afternoon (7/11/10). She swam up to it and around it as it fed and preened unconcernedly, got within 15' of it. They are not known to breed west of the Cascades in Washington, to my knowledge, so this was a surprise.
