Cliff Swallows are occasional in Edmonds so when I got a tip this
morning about two at the Marsh, I headed down to check out the day's
birds (7-12-10). As I reached the Marsh, an Osprey glided from
east to west and headed out toward the Sound. There were 13
migrating peeps at mid-day, 12 Western Sandpipers and 1 Least.
Across Willow Creek, a concentration of 7 Belted Kingfishers were
perched in some snags. A Caspian Tern flew to the south. Okay, it
was time to make myself dizzy following the swallows as they swooped
and swirled. I did find at least one Cliff Swallow in this very
active crowd. At the Public Pier I noted an Osprey on top of the
pilings with the three gourds. It was most likely the same bird that
had flown over the Marsh. Only 1 Heermann's Gull was around, and it
was on Olympic Beach with a resting flock of California and Glaucous-
winged Gulls. A few Rhinoceros Auklets and Pigeon Guillemots were
about all that were out on the water. Willow Creek Hatchery was dead
as the activity continues to be up the hill on the Point Edwards
Public Path. When I reached the pond at the end of the path, I noted
that the Gadwall hen's brood was down from 7 to 5. She has
definitely lost one of her own, but I was not certain whether the
Mallard chick was still with her. There was one moose in the brood
but if it was the Mallard, it no longer had its yellow down. It
looked identical to the younger Gadwalls, just much larger.
