Tried to track down the Guemes I. Acorn Woodpecker without any luck early yesterday. There were many birds at the residence (thanks for permission Jan), nothing extraordinary but I did note an Anna's Hummingbird among perhaps 10-12 Rufous, along with a House Wren. After checking I ventured east afterward.

Perhaps most unusual along the route was a CHIPPING SPARROW singing and easily seen on territory from Bryson Rd off the Sauk Valley Rd., central Skagit Co. Driving north from Darrington toward Rockport, this small road heads east off the main highway just a couple miles after you see the Skagit County sign. The road dead-ends after about 2 miles at the Sauk River. I don't recall any sea-level breeding season birds in recent years, although it is clear there are breeders near the timberline in the extreme east. Also apparent here were two LAZULI BUNTINGS, absolute hordes of swallows of 6 species (approximately 30 BANK), one BLACK and several Vaux's Swifts.

At Corkindale Creek, there was no sign of the recent rarities, but a GRAY CATBIRD was lurking about near the creek and very close to the warbler spot. There have been a number in central Skagit Co in recent years, spanning May 12-July 11. This could well be the same bird Gary Bletsch had back in June. Still no kingbirds here, but 7 LAZULI BUNTINGS were counted along the road. One or two AM. REDSTARTS could be heard in the gallery forest at NP 213 Road.
