Travis Audubon Society in Austin will put you on the Golden-cheeked Warbler
and Black-capped Vireo.

Many miles south: Big Bend:


At the Chisos Mtn Lodge, the Black-capped vireo can be seen in the scrub
near the campgrounds. The Colima can be seen on the steep trail away from
the buildings, one-half or a mile or two, if you move slowly and take your
time. You do not have to leave before first light, but the earlier out of
the parking lot, the better. If you want lunches to be packed by the Chisos
Mtn. Lodge, be sure to emphasize the day before that you need the lunches at
6 am. Otherwise pack your own.

Do not leave doors to lodge rooms open; you might have visitors, including
the beautiful Hog-nosed Skunks. I had a meaningful discussion with one on a
beautiful summer evening; she got bored with the discourse and finally left.
Although I invoked the deity several times as I watched her tour my room,
bed and bathroom, she showed no particular interest in matters of religion.

I have never seen a more beautiful mammal; she was so creamy white and jet
black.

Big Bend for a week was as much fun as I ever had. I went with Naturalist
Journeys.

The roadrunners convene outside the dining room at Chisos Mtn. early
mornings to gorge on the beetles and moths which were fried by the halogen
lights overnight.

Wrens everywhere.
