I observed an adult BONAPARTE'S GULL in full breeding plumage at the Port of
Olympia yesterday afternoon (7/16), both flying and sitting on the water
across from the two cranes. This appears to be a little early. Also seen at
the Port were two CASPIAN TERNS, one each PIGEON GUILLEMOT and PELAGIC
CORMORANT. There are no PURPLE MARTINS as in previous years, however there
are at least 3 or 4 breeding pairs at Boston Harbor with several males
flying around.
We stopped at Burfoot County Park on the way back and took a walk down to
the beach. Here I saw a PIGEON GUILLEMOT carrying food to its nesting cavity
in the cliff and returning to its mate on the water. That was a first for
me! Also nesting in the cliff was a pair of NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS.

Good Birding!
