I was going to stop by the Fill this afternoon anyhow, but seeing the
reference to the semipalmated sandpiper was an added incentive. Sure
enough it was easily found at Shoveler's pond with two least sandpipers,
two killdeer and a beautiful lesser yellowlegs. The sunlight was
perfect (as was the temperature and light breeze...SPECTACULAR day!!)
and I got good pictures of the semi and fabulous photos of the
yellowlegs which I had not photographed before. A little later I
circumnavigated the Main pond and again saw a lesser yellowlegs (same
one?) towards the southwest end where the geese often hang out. Just as
I drew out the camera, the yellowlegs flew off (towards Shoveler's where
I found one again later so expect it was the same bird). Since I
already had good photos. no problem but then a bonus...out from the
brush strutted a Wilson's Snipe and stood perfectly still in perfect
light. I have flushed and seen many at the Fill before but never one
posing like this and never allowing a photo. Otherwise it was pretty
quiet except for MANY young birds: swallows, sparrows, common
yellowthroats, ducklings, goslings and even the recently fledged bald eagle.
