The July 26, 2010 edition of the New Yorker magazine has an article by Johnathan Frazen which describes "songbird decimation for fun and profit- & in open defiance of the law" It is not an easy read. He states that a billion birds are killed each year by humans on the migratory flyways of the Mediterranean in Cyprus, Malta & Italy. There is also a podcast on the New Yorker website entitled "The Sound of No Birds Singing"
