A few days ago, I was at the Wenas Campground for the annual Audubon event
when Kathy Andrich wandered by, head pointed into the trees, saying
something about "THERE IT IS!" in an excited tone. Looking up, there was a
white blur moving quickly through a few of the Ponderosa Pines, usually
headed up into a photographer's why-try zone.

Suddenly, it descended to about seven feet from the ground, and it seemed as
if all of the bird's followers were struck quiet watching this little beauty
poke into the crags of the pine's trunk.

June's Desktop Calendar Wallpaper is that same White-headed Woodpecker.

ps: my thanks to Kathy for finding and bringing it to my lazy bones, and to
Ruth Sullivan for pointing me farther afield to locate the WHWO again on
Sunday. It was magickal, and I'll be exploring that area more on my next
visit...
