Things are definitely getting interesting around Ridgefield. Over the last Month I have heard from three good birders about a small owl they were hearing on the Carty Unit. The thing was they were split on whether it was a northern saw-whet or northern pygmy-owl. Last weekend we had a night walk and the group found a northern saw-whet owl. Tonight after work I walked the Oaks to Wetland Trail to the spot the owl was seen last weekend. No luck but as I kept walking at 5:00pm I heard a northern saw-whet calling and as I walked in it's general direction I found a young great horned owl. I never found the saw-whet but heard it again. I was walking back to the office and as I was almost to the Plankhouse I heard a northern pygmy-owl calling! I stood there for about 4-5 mins and tried to figure out where it was. It was a distance away and for those familiar it seemed like it was in the direction of the north end of Long Field. At least somewhere along a line between the Plankhouse and that location. The bird did not repeatedly call but rather waited 20 to 30 seconds between calling.

BEWARE THE ELECTRIC GATE CLOSES AT 8:00 PM AND THE POLICE DO NOT LOOK KINDLY ON THOSE THEY COME TO LET OUT.
