Hi Tweeters,
Jeff Jendro and I did a little birding in Cowlitz County and had one big
surprise on Shetler Road. We heard a calling bird that I didn't recognize
and tracing down the source we found a NORTHERN BOBWHITE. I'm aware that
this bird is outside the range of the accepted population in Washington but
it was great fun to see and hear it anyway. Shetler is a short deadend road
0.6 miles up Lewis River Road from where SR 503 makes the sharp right and
heads toward Clark County. Also this morning we had great looks at a HERMIT
WARBLER; there were others singing in the area. These were at the
intersection of 7600 and 7601 roads above Merrill Lake. From Lewis River
Road just west of the town of Cougar take FR 8100 (signed Kalama Rec Area)
for 6.9 miles to the gated unsigned crossing of 7600 Road. walk around the
gate on the right and go approximately 0.1 mile to the signed 7600X7601
intersection.
Good Birding
