Like Connie, I got wet at the fill yesterday as well. Indeed saw Connie
there and that is always an opportunity to find out what is going on.
Was with her when the Caspian tern flew overhead (way overhead) and
benefited (although not until 30 minutes later) from her info re Purple
Martin. I saw the bird around the main pond and probably would have not
looked at EVERY swallow if Connie had not provided the heads up. Even
in the dim gray of the day however the bird was unmistakeable - size for
sure, very dark including unerneath for sure, but the surprise was that
on several of its twists and turns the iridescent blue/purple was quite
visible. In addition to that my highlight came when I checked again for
wood ducks in Yesler Cove and where Saturday there had been 3 males and
3 females, on Sunday there were 8 males and no females (although they
may have been tucked back into the weeds). Oh wait, the real highlight
was on the wooden bridge over the slough heading over to the parking
area. A VERY energetic probably 3 yr old was there with her mother on a
nature walk. Two male Cinnamon Teal obliged right under us and I
pointed them out to the girl who saw the "red ducks" and later very
excitedly remembered that they are called Simanim Teal. Planting seeds
is one of life's most rewarding opportunities.
