I watched a female Yellow-headed Blackbird feeding in a field, close to the edge of Tibbits Creek at Lake Sammamish State Park around 12:30 pm today. I entered the sounth end of the Park by crossing the street at Costco (SE 56th / NW Sammamish Road), walking by a sports field (on the left), and following a VERY soggy, muddy trail (had my boots on, whew!) surrounded by trees and high grass, for about 1/2 mile, to where things open up to a newly planted area, with the Creek in the distance. She was busy feeding and sharing the area with about 40 Mallards, 10 Brown-headed Cowbirds, a couple of Killdeers, and 3 Spotted Sandpipers.



I saw one young Red-tailed Hawk perched on the edge of the nest (at the sound end of the field in a cottonwood). It looked like there may have been another young'in, but I couldn't tell for sure with just binocs. I'll bring a scope back tomorrow if I can. One of the adults was perched about 3 trees over and calling, and calling and calling. Encouranging the young to take the plunge?
