I keep my bird seed in a big metal trash can. Every once and awhile the lid
is off and I suspect raccoons but who knows. Today the lid was ajar and as I
took the lid off a pair of black-capped chickadee fledglings looked up me
from the pile of seed. They fluttered around in a bit of panic but could not
fly, I suspect because they had over indulged in feeding. Not sure exactly
how to get them out I finally just tipped the can over and spilled them out
with some seeds. They still could not fly and hopped into the nearest cover.
Immediately an adult bird swooped down, rather close to my head, and landed
above them chattering away. I could almost hear moms voice scolding them for
playing hooky.
