Tweeters,

I didn't have time to join any of the WOS field trips this weekend, but still wanted it to make the WOS meeting on Friday so I made my own little field trip on the way to Wenatchee.

I drove 97 N towards Leavenworth and took the Camas Road up to Camas Meadows. The Camas and Balsamroot are in full bloom right now and are beautiful. Just as Lewis and Clark describe it- " The quawmash is now in blume and from the colour of its bloom at a short distance it resembles lakes of fine clear water, so complete in this deception that on first sight I could have sworn it was water."-Meriweather Lewis, June 12, 1806.

I walked through the gated road (which has a nesting House Wren in it) and continued up the road. Along the way were Lazuli Buntings, Red-naped Sapsuckers, Chipping Sparrow, Mountain Chickadee, Western-wood Pewee, and Colliope Hummingbirds. The male did his display dive with sound just off the road and continued to do so for about 3 minutes. I had not seen this species dive before so it was a treat for me.

I think that in the future, I will do a field trip to this area. Great meadow and wetland habitat with copses of Aspen surrounded by Pine forest.
