This has been an exciting weekend at my house. First, on Thursday, a Red
Crossbill landed on the Finch feeder-tube and stayed there for about 5
minutes--ignoring the short, panicky flights and scolding from the four
male Goldfinch that usually hang out there. That is the first Crossbill
I have seen here ever.

On Thursday also, the male Rufous Hummingbird that usually hangs around
the salmonberry bushes along the driveway hovered instead in front of
the Bay Window several different times during the day--people watching,
I guess, because there are no flowers of any kind for ten feet in any
direction from there nor are there nectar feeders (there or anywhere
else on the whole five acres).

On Friday, six fledgling Mourning Doves appeared at the ground feeders
with the four adult regulars. They were back today and joined by three
fledgling Spotted Towhees. (However, after the third one showed up,
Daddy herded them all back under the brush pile behind the feeders).
