Hi Birders,
Today (6/17/10) there were at least 10 GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS along a 4 mile
stretch of Swawilla Basin Road in southwest Ferry County. I had great looks
at one bird, so-so looks at another, and heard at least 8 more, some even as
I was driving. They were in area about 4 miles in from the Manilla Creek
Road end (west) and continuing for the next 4 miles. I'm not sure if this is
a code 5 bird because this area is so infrequently visited or if the weather
is a factor in today's numbers. The habitat sure looks good. Also seen while
driving the entire length of Swawilla Basin were a few VESPER SPARROWS, more
LARK SPARROWS than I thought possible, and a few GRAY FLYCATCHERS near the
SR 21 end. A really fine plan B to escape the cold and rain I was
experiencing on the Omak to Republic drive in the morning. By the way the
Keller Ferry is out of commission and will be for several more weeks, so
keep that in mind if visiting the area.
Good Birding.
