Hello everyone,

I'm writing from Cali, Colombia, where the term "yard birds" takes on a
whole new meaning!

Thanks to advice from several generous Tweeters, I brought with me both my
80-400 zoom lens and Hilty's "Birds of Colombia" -- both big and heavy to
carry, but worth every ounce and moment of nuisance now that I'm here.

So far I've been only in Cali, where I'm participating in a Spanish-language
immersion program, but starting Monday we'll be taking field trips to
different parts of the country where I'll hopefully encounter new birds. So
most of my photos so far are a few yard birds, but WOW! what yard birds they
are. I'll post a trip report once I get home in mid-July, but if anyone's
interested in following along, I'm posting photos almost daily on my Flickr
page. I had been planning to wait until I had a bird more or less identified
before posting its photo...until I encountered my first green hummingbird
and realized that identifying each of the dozens of green hummingbird
species could take a looooong time. ID help is always welcomed!

Here's one from this morning, and more are in that set:

Happy birding,
