After reading Richard Fleming's post about the Eared Grebe at Green Lake
yesterday afternoon, my husband Jim and I drove to Green Lake (with much of
the rest of Seattle) and, using his directions, were successful in finding
it. When we first saw it, it was east of the Small Craft Center and the
easternmost pier at the south end of the lake. It was very actively feeding
and moving east, often quite close to the shore. Four photos taken shortly
after 6 PM are posted at http://gallery.me.com/james_r_king/100101. The red
eye dominates some of the photos but the sunlight also caught the yellow
plumes on its head, turning them to gold.
It would certainly be interesting to know how this Eared Grebe ended up at
Green Lake at this time of year.
