"Ravens in Winter by Bernd Heinrich is a great book on "morality" in birds.
Heinrich wondered why ravens alerted all their brethren when there was a
dead carcass to eat. Were they being altruistic? (Not normal corvid
behavior!) It turns out that if a bird spotted a carcass on its own
territory, it kept quiet. If the carcass was on some other breeding pair's
territory, it told everyone in the neighborhood, thus overwhelming the pair
with tons of thieves and getting access to the food.
It's a great read, especially the part about how adolescent ravens flirt and
show off for each other and for humans.
