Hi Tweeters,
Tuesday (6/29/10) at the Port of Kalama North Property I had great looks at
a RED-EYED VIREO in the wooded area at the north end of the dredge spoils. I
went to the interior of the woods, but the paths are a bit dicey due to this
springs high water (driftwood, mucky etc.). The bird may respond to playback
from the vegetation edge. The HOUSE WREN was still present at the south end
where the road, dredge spoils, and woods come together, but he's much less
vocal. HORNED LARKS continue on the dredge spoils or in the grass inside the
Steelscape fence. The south end of Cottonwood Island has a BANK SWALLOW
colony and many forage over the Columbia near this area also.
At the Toutle River RV Resort on the southwest corner of I-5 exit 52 there
were 2 fledglings and an adult WESTERN BLUEBIRD hanging around the fenceline
separating this property from he railroad directly down from the
office/store. Check in at at the office to bird this property, which also
gives access to the BANK SWALLOW colony in the dredge spoil cutbank visible
from I-5 along a walking trail to the mouth of the Toutle River. The
bluebirds apparently nested in the nest boxes along this trail.
