A new friend and I called Saw-whets at a small Tacoma wetland at dark. I was impressed that we immediately had flight, right over our heads. I called again and it flew over our heads again.
In the darkness, I could not get a clear view, so tried a third time and it flew toward me from the opposite direction, with better contrast. "What was it, he said?" "A bat."
What I hoped was a Saw-whet tuned out to be my first bat sighting of the season.
