We?ve maintained two hummingbird feeders all winter for the two to three
Anna?s hummingbirds that stayed with us. Today, shortly before 4:00 PM I
walked by them and heard a sharper humming sound than usual and was very
surprised to see a male Rufous on one of the feeders. Not long afterward
another male Rufous showed up and the first battle of the year began.
Pretty cool winter sighting for us. We?re about seven miles SE of Port
Townsend and about 140 feet above Discovery Bay.
Earlier in the morning, a pair of Bald eagles remained perched on a snag
hanging over the Bay, and I should also mention the Red-naped sapsucker
working on a cedar adjacent to our house.
