Subject: [Tweeters] Edmonds: Virginia Rails Back at the Marsh

Hi Tweets,

Snow-covered Olympics, Mt. Baker looming from the north, blue sky,
light breeze on the water, and a nip in the air greeted us this
morning (3-6-10) on the Edmonds public pier. Red-necked Grebes are
getting their red necks, a few Bonaparte's Gulls were south of the
pier, Brant were further out, and one of the adult Bald Eagles was
perched on the single piling between the pier and the ferry dock.
Two Virginia Rails were observed at the marsh on Wednesday (3-3-10).
This morning five Killdeer were present and it looks as if the tide
gate has been opened as water was spreading north into the marsh from
Willow Creek. Several Great Blue Herons have been present the last
two evenings but not this morning. There is no sign of nest activity
yet. The hatchery continued to be birdy with a Golden-crowned
Kinglet making an appearance, a Winter Wren singing, and a Bewick's
Wren using the brush pile in the new native plant garden (grand
opening late April). When I report waterfowl from Point Edwards,
these are seen in the two ponds on the south side of the marsh that
are only visible from the P.E. property and the surface water
retention pond at the end of the P.E. public path. No sign yet of
swallows at the marsh or Rufous Hummingbirds in the vicinity. Any
day . . .
