Today, while checking out the Arboretum around noon, I found a female Rufous Hummingbird sitting on a nest. While I have seen Rufous earlier (I had a male at my feeder on ferbruary 20, 2008) I have never seen one on the nest this early. I know a couple of people are monitoring them in the area. Has anyone ever had them on the nest this early? I spotted her collecting lichen about 20 feet from the nest. She would line the nest while sitting in it, sit for a few minutes, then go get some more. I watched her for about 1/2 hour, oblivious to walkers and joggers (and me). She would repeat this about every 5 minutes.
