Apparently the correct spelling is Augur, not Auger, although both are common on the web. The bird's binomial is Buteo augur. An augur was someone who foretold the future through the behavior of birds, but I don't know if this has a connection to how this hawk's specific name was selected. I am curious to know how the name originated, if anyone can find a source.
