The morning (3-20-10) started cool (mid-30s) with high, light
overcast with dappled blue sky. There was little breeze on the
waterfront. Of note were 45 Brant, 15 Western Grebe, 3 Common Murre,
a Rhinoceros Auklet, and one Sanderling on the rocks at the south end
of Olympic Beach. Of non-avian note was the gray whale spy-hopping
off the Edmonds Pier at about 9:15 a.m. The first swallow of the
season was one Tree Swallow passing through the Marsh yesterday on
its way north. No swallows were seen this morning. There is still
no activity on the heron nests. We have confirmed that there are a
pair of Red-breasted Sapsuckers at the Hatchery and they are
excavating in a snag. A Wilson's Snipe flushed from the pond at the
end of the Point Edwards path. There were over 20 Gadwall on that
pond with one American Wigeon drake among them. It was pretty warm
by the end of our walk at 10:30 and the ferry waiting line was long!
