Way back in 1978/79, when I was staying at my parents' home near Miami, Florida, I did some birding at a county park south of the metro area. There was a small building housing an office and a large screened in "Florida room." I don't remember many of the details, but for some reason I went into the office. They had a Florida subspecies of Burrowing Owl that they let loose to have the run of the Florida room. It was really a personality! A piece of food was tossed (or was it a live mouse?), and it made a big production of "mantling" it with its wings, warning us to stay back, etc.
