Although it was chilly this morning (3-22-10), spring was definitely
in the air as four VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOWS finally appeared over the
Marsh in an acrobatic show. Another sign of spring was the male
RUFOUS-HUMMINGBIRD at the end of the Point Edwards path. As far as
we know, these are first of year sightings for the public areas of
the Edmonds Bowl. The HOODED MERGANSER drake that has been playing
peek-a-boo on Willow Creek was among the Gadwalls on the Point
Edwards pond. Both adult BALD EAGLES were perched on trees in the
Hatchery. there are still no Great Blue Herons in the Marsh and no
sign of nest activity. Over 130 BRANT were on the Sound, along with
one COMMON LOON, two RHINOCEROS AUKLETS, and one BONAPARTE's GULL.
The PIED-BILLED GREBE was floating inside the marina. We did not
search inside the Hatchery this morning as an Edmonds school bus
disgorged a full load of kids for a tour of the fish-rearing
operation as we were coming back down from Point Edwards. It was a
good time to head home for breakfast.
