While in Phoeniz, I would not miss Hassayampa, NW of Phoenix. It is a
Conservancy site with several trails and an excellent chance for some
Arizona specialties.

You should also take advantage of the SE Arizona Birding Trail guide:

And when you go to the Desert Museum outside of Tuscon, spend the entire
day in the area. The Museum is one of the great ones in the world and it
is far enough outside of town to be a great birding site on its own.
Your kids will be amply entertained with the visit.
