A friend and I ventured to the Leahy Junction Sage Grouse lek area
described in Hal Opperman's "Birder's Guide to Washington" (pg 385)
early this morning. We arrived to the area around 0630, not quite
daybreak. The wind was howling and it was bitterly cold. We did not
see any displaying grouse, however when we drove about 1/4 mile west
down Rd 19 NE we suddenly saw 3 males just over the fence near the
road. They quickly moved back in to the sagebrush and we lost sight of
them. Going back up the road, we scoped from the rise and were able to
see 1 bird crouching low trying to stay out of the wind. We watched him
for about 10 minutes until he was spooked by a female N Harrier that
flew nearby.
