Last year I first heard a Red-breasted Sapsucker drumming on a telephone pole just up the street on May 10. A pair nested in a nearby dead alder trunk and raised at least several young, then disappeared after June 25, not to be seen again. I almost never see sapsuckers in the neighborhood. If they are around, they are very inconspicuous.

But this morning the characteristic drumming came from the same pole, much to my delight, and I checked it out to be sure it wasn't an overactive imagination and a kid with a new toy drum. I am jumping to the conclusion that the same nesting tree may be used again, and I will be watching it. Maybe the birds were there last year long before I detected them.
