Hi Dennis and Tweets:
As a matter of fact I made an issue of the 2008 GH CBC Brown Pelican
numbers...a total of 52 were seen on the harbor that day; it was also 48
degrees and mostly sunny with little wind. But that was the exception.
According to the American Birds report of the 2008 count period, "Record
numbers of Brown Pelicans remained late into the season. The high numbers
were attributed to a milder than average autumn and higher than average runs
of bait fish. Thousands stayed along the coast through the end of December,
most of them concentrated at Oregon coastal counts, with the highest count
coming from Coos Bay, OR, where 2712 were reported." It goes on to say by
January 1st many were in local rehab centers due to high-wind related broken
bones and frostbitten feet.
2009 results, on the other hand were only 6...and that is 6 too many as far
as I am concerned! Dennis is right, they should not be here in December, and
April is too early for the numbers we have been seeing out here on the
coast.
