With Michael still back east, Matt Bartels and I got to substitute for him on our Marymoor walk yesterday, 6 May 2010

0600- 1230. The day started out cloudy and 43F. It stayed cloudy most of the day, but no wind. Later there were some sunbreaks. We finished at 52F. 4.20 water level. It was a good day with lots of bird activity, singing and calling.

70 species, 77 for week (see below), looks like 112 for the year

Canada Goose 3
Wood Duck 1 male, 1 female with young (rowing club ponds - small pond)
Gadwall 2 pairs
Mallard approx. 20, males and females
Bufflehead 5? pairs, one on river, others at lake
Hooded Merganser 2 flying overhead, 1 female at rowing club ponds - small pond
Common Merganser 4 flying by repeatedly - 1 male, 3 females; 1 male at lake
Ring-necked Pheasant - 1 male in usual spot east of compost piles
Great Blue Heron 6?
Green Heron 1 at river by rowing club
Osprey at least 1 at nest
Bald Eagle at least 6 adults, at least 7 immatures, (most at lake, but also over main area)
Red-tailed Hawk 4 adults
Virginia Rail 1 heard on boardwalk near Ash/Cottonwood forest
Killdeer 1
Ring-billed Gull - 1 flyover
Glaucous-winged Gull 2 early over soccer fields
Rock Pigeon 1 flyover
Barn Owl 2 adults early, 3 young in nest box
Vaux's Swift 1 flyover
Anna's Hummingbird 2 males (on in usual place on boardwalk, 1 in usual place in P-Patch)
Rufuous Hummingbird at least 4 males
Belted Kingfisher 1 male
Red-breasted Sapsucker 1 heard near entrance to Cottonwood forest, calling
Downy Woodpecker 1 male seen, 2? more heard, calling
Hairy Woodpecker 1 male, 1 female (exchange at nest tree across from rowing club dock), calling
Northern Flicker 1 r-s seen, 1 heard, calling
Hammond's Flycatcher 1 early near dog central - much studied, decided from primary projection, bill
Western Kingbird 1 at south end of East Meadow on west side of path
Cassin's Vireo 1 heard and seen along road into rowing club, singing
Warbling Vireo at least 1 heard and seen along road into rowing club - maybe a second one, singing
Steller's Jay 1 early, 1 late at rowing club parking lot
American Crow 30-50 leaving the roost early
Purple Martin 1 male at compost piles
Tree Swallow many, probably 25+, several around boxes in East Meadow
Violet-green Swallow 4? near compost piles
Cliff Swallow 2+ near compost piles
Barn Swallow 1 at lake, 2 near compost piles , 3-4 from rowing club; (many other swallows at lake but too far out for i.d.)
Black-capped Chickadee at least 6, singing and calling
Chestnut-backed Chickadee 4-5 including at nest tree in snag row
Bushtit 2 - at least two nests torn apart (not sure if destroyed by predators or wind)
Red-breasted Nuthatch 1 at nest tree (pitch at opening)
Brown Creeper at least 4 heard, singing
Bewick's Wren at least 10 heard singing, one seen going into probably nest in split bark in old cottonwood in snag row
Marsh Wren 6 singing
Golden-crowned Kinglet at least 1, maybe others singing
American Robin 20+, a young bird along road into rowing club (fairly near where Micheal had a nest)
European Starling 15
Cedar Waxwing 12 overhead - singing; 2-3 perched near gate from dog area (maybe part of earlier group)
Orange-crowned Warbler at least 8 singing, 2 seen
Yellow Warbler 1 heard early, 1 seen on road into rowing club late
Yellow-rumped Warbler 30?, both Audubon's and Myrtle's
Common Yellowthroat 12?, males singing
Wilson's Warbler 1 singing near Park office and Mansion
Western Tanager 2 adult males in conifers near bathrooms, one more highly colored than other
Spotted Towhee at least 4, singing
Savannah Sparrow lots, maybe 25, singing
Song Sparrow 4 singing, 5 calling, 6 silent
Lincoln's Sparrow 2
White-crowned Sparrow 4? - pugetensis, gambelli; singing

notable misses: American Coot, Pied-billed Grebe, Band-tailed Pigeon (on 6th), Green-winged Teal, Wilson's Snipe, Double-crested Cormorant, American Pipit (Matt says we forgot to walk the fields across from the compost piles)

Mammals: bunny, deer, deer mouse, E. Gray Squirrel
Amphibeans: Red-eared Slider, Painted Turtle
