Subject: Kalama Birding
To: Tweeters <tweeters at u.washington.edu>

Hi Tweeters,
I spent about 4 hours in the Kalama area yesterday (5/12/10) birding the
Port of Kalama properties. There appears to be a strong GREAT EGRET breeding
presence at the heronry there. From the wide shoulder of Meeker Road on the
east side of Meeker Pond (the wetland just north of downtown visible from
I-5) I counted 11 egrets in the heronry visible in the tops of the
cottonwoods just south of the grain elevators on the Columbia riverfront.
Ther were also 4 Great Egrets in Meekers pond at that time. When I got down
to the frontage road on the west side of I-5 and was much closer to the
heronry, but at a worse angle, I could make out 7 Egrets on sitting on nests
with 5 others in the vicinity. When at the port's north property there were
9 Great Egrets in the slough there.
On the dredge spoils at the north property there were at least 3 HORNED
LARKS. The one bird that I had a great look at was very yellow on the face
and breast and even down onto the belly but I saw no evidence of streaking
and the nape was a duller red than I woud expect for "Streaked" Horned Lark.
Any ideas?
Also present at the north property was a singing HOUSE WREN as well as a
nice push of migrant warblers etc.
